Abby's Birthday Party

Abby turned one a few weeks ago. We had a great time celebrating with family and friends and we started a fun new family tradition of having Dan make our birthday cakes! After talking Dan out of making Abby a Star Wars birthday cake, we ended up with this beauty...

I know you all had no idea that Dan has such mean cake baking and decorating prowess. Despite frosting being everywhere in the kitchen and having to put a chop stick down the middle of it so that it didn't fall over... it was the best birthday cake ever.

I even learned a very important thing from Dan about cake making: I made cupcakes for our party guests to eat so Abby could have that cake all to herself. Thinking I was all hoity-toity I made my cupcakes from scratch. Dan used a boxed cake mix. Dan completed mixing and baking his little cakes in less than an hour. After both of our cakes were baked, we did a taste test. Dan's cake was totally better! Three hours down the toilet, I threw my hoity-toity cupcakes in the garbage and pulled out another boxed cake mix. The boxed ones were delish, go figure.

Abby was very dainty about eating her cake. Fingertips only. But like her mom, she's a frosting girl!

And she loves her little baby doll and stoller walker gifts that she got. Every morning when I go to get her from her crib she's already reaching for the stroller and saying, "baby".

Just a few comments in my defense:

1. I never had any plans to make a Star Wars cake for Abby. Britt just thought it would be funny to say that. She's a very funny mom.

2. I have no baking prowess. Brittany shadowed me through the mixing, the baking, and the ...well, that's it. I frosted solo. That's why the frosting was inches thick in some parts, and...well, that's why the frosting was inches thick.

3. Brittany failed to note that our other gift for Abby was a size 3 soccer ball, that she plays with almost as much as the baby in the stroller. Watch out Pele and Mia Hamm.

That last picture looks just like you when you were little (well according to pictures or my memory from heaven I guess.)

I think Dan should purposely try and make a leaning cake next year and try and outmatch this years.

Sure Dan didn't pull out a Martha Stewart magazine?

And it's the whole boxed cake thing so sad?! Ha!

Meet Daniel and Brittany

The challenge that began with "Have a nice life, Daniel Burton" is progressing with favorable results. Surviving and thriving on lively discussions about books, Abby, or the post-grad school world, the Burtons show signs of excellent health and familial success.

Dan and Britt met on a hot July 4th in 2005. Shortly after inviting her to join him for a panoramic view of the Independence Day fireworks, and not long after her denial, Daniel and Britt agreed to break the ice over ice cream. They soon realized that they were both book geeks, decided a permanent union was worth evaluating, and were married just over a year later on another beautiful July day.

After graduating with a law degree from both he and Brittany's alma mater's rival, Daniel is corporate counsel at the Woodbury Corporation, a commercial real estate management and development company in Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, and far more interestingly, Brittany is raising a new generation of Burtons as full-time mother and family creative director. Abby is two and a half, and #2 is on the way, with arrival expected in late June of 2011. The Burtons look forward to many years of exploring canyons, creeks, and mountain tops, swapping novels, notes, and ideas, and enjoying great discussions about people, politics, and their family.

Daniel and Brittany are both graduates of the 2002 class of Brigham Young University. Abby is gunning to graduate from diapers, sooner than later.
