"Rapunzel's Revenge" by Shannon Hale & Dean Hale, illustrated by Nathan Hale

Rapunzel's Revenge Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon Hale

Britt's review

Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Rapunzel’s Revenge is the first graphic novel I’ve ever read. So… I’m no graphic novel expert and have nothing to compare Rapunzel with. The illustrations were awesome, the story idea was very creative (I love fresh takes on fairy tales), and the writing was okay.

I’m not sure what age group graphic novels target? Maybe my nephew Bowen (age four) will get a kick out of something like this in a couple years? -SHOUT OUT to ANJULI and JOY: Try this book on Colin and Buddy and report back.-

I’d love to talk to someone who knows about graphic novels and get their opinion about this book (and for that matter, anyone else who has read it). Until then, I’ll say Rapunzel’s got some serious spunk and skills, but overall, her story is just average.

Both Shannon and Nate were at the conference I attended. It was interesting to hear Shannon talking about the reason she did this book. One of the biggest trends right now with the graphic novel is that it gets a reluctant reader reading, hooking them with an interesting story so mingled with pictures that they don't know they are reading. They get the satisfaction of actually finishing a book and being able to understand what has happened the whole time. I too was unsure of the graphic novel, but I can see they work as both a reading tool and one to entertain outside of the box, literally. My kids (8,6 & 4 at the end of this month) were very excited about the book, although the 8 year old is the only one who can actually read the book right now.

How's that for a comment?

I have been loving your book reviews!! I have a huge list of books to read. Hopefully as soon as I finish my finals this week I can get to the library. And I plan on reading as much as possible before classes start up again on the 4th of April. This book sounds great for Colin and Conner I will let you know what they think!
Thanks for the great reviews!

I too thought it was a fun story, but the graphic novel genre doesn't do much for me. I like words too much.

We actually read this book last year. Crazy, I never thought we would read a book before you. You are right Andrew loved it. We had to renew it at the library three times! I agree the pictures are great and the story is fresh. Zac and I both read through it too. It is a fun read.

Speaking as a mom with children who love graphic novels (Ethan, in particular), I can say this book is a hit. I got it for my 11 yr. old son for Christmas and he has read it several times, and then my 5 yr. old got a hold of it and he loves it, too. I personally thought it was creative and fun and very original. It definitely appeals to kids ages 4 or 5 and up. I let my friend borrow it for her grandson, who is 8, and he read it 4 or 5 times before they gave it back. It is definitely geared more for the younger crowd. Great book! Another really fun book for the younger crowd that my kids LOVE is "Once Upon a Motorcycle Dude" by Kevin O'Malley. This book appeals to both boys and girls and is hilarious!

Meet Daniel and Brittany

The challenge that began with "Have a nice life, Daniel Burton" is progressing with favorable results. Surviving and thriving on lively discussions about books, Abby, or the post-grad school world, the Burtons show signs of excellent health and familial success.

Dan and Britt met on a hot July 4th in 2005. Shortly after inviting her to join him for a panoramic view of the Independence Day fireworks, and not long after her denial, Daniel and Britt agreed to break the ice over ice cream. They soon realized that they were both book geeks, decided a permanent union was worth evaluating, and were married just over a year later on another beautiful July day.

After graduating with a law degree from both he and Brittany's alma mater's rival, Daniel is corporate counsel at the Woodbury Corporation, a commercial real estate management and development company in Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, and far more interestingly, Brittany is raising a new generation of Burtons as full-time mother and family creative director. Abby is two and a half, and #2 is on the way, with arrival expected in late June of 2011. The Burtons look forward to many years of exploring canyons, creeks, and mountain tops, swapping novels, notes, and ideas, and enjoying great discussions about people, politics, and their family.

Daniel and Brittany are both graduates of the 2002 class of Brigham Young University. Abby is gunning to graduate from diapers, sooner than later.
