The Maze Of Bones by Rick RiordanBritt's Review
Rating: 3 of 5 stars
Rick Riordian is one of my favorite adolescent authors. I thought he did a good job with The Maze of Bones but I’m not as crazy about it as I am his Percy Jackson series.
Parentless Dan and Amy Cahill are from a very famous and wealthy family. When their favorite aunt Grace dies, they are thrown into a race across the globe after… well… 39 clues that lead to some sort of family secret that will bring world power to the winner.
Some of the things I’m liking about this series: how it explores different aspects of history and may spark an interest in young readers to learn more, it’s a great series for boys, and girls too, but I’m always feeling like it’s harder to find good stuff for boys to read, and the interactive piece that involves actual clues which lead readers to a website where they can delve into the hunt for the 39 clues themselves. So far, it hasn’t been necessary to get on the website and use the clues to follow the books, it just a bonus.
I’m still somewhat dubious about the 39 Clues Series as a whole. The series is set to be ten books long, each book written by different authors, but all the books being about the same continuing story. It will be interesting to see if all the authors can create a similar voice for the characters despite different writing styles and such. I’m halfway into book two and I like it so far. One of the reasons I’m dubious about the series is because it’s so many books, and it kind of seems like the series is just one mass marketing scheme to sell a lot of books. We’ll see. For now, we will keep reading to see what is in store for Dan and Amy Cahill!
